Samsonov, the merchant

The Brothers Karamazov

Samsonov, the merchant, is the townsman from whom Dmitri seeks a loan of three thousand roubles. Though he appears only briefly in Dmitri’s account, the failed appeal establishes a pattern of urgency, misplaced hope, and humiliation that leads into the larger financial crisis surrounding Dmitri and Grushenka.

The Loan Dmitri Seeks

Dmitri tells the investigators that he went to Samsonov two days earlier, asking to borrow three thousand roubles on what he describes as safe security. He presents the visit as a response to a sudden and pressing necessity, making the loan attempt the opening point in the chronology he offers to explain his movements and decisions.

A Reversal in Dmitri’s Account

At first, Dmitri recounts the episode in an expansive, genial mood, punctuated by exclamations at the investigators’ questions. Yet he has by then understood that Samsonov made a fool of him. The contrast between the confidence of his request and his later recognition of the deception makes the failed encounter a small but consequential reversal in his account.

Place in the Financial Crisis

The attempted loan is connected to Dmitri’s earlier handling of money entrusted to him by Katerina Ivanovna. She had given him three thousand roubles to send to her sister and another relation in Moscow; at a moment when he had just fallen in love with Grushenka, he carried Grushenka to Mokroe and spent half the sum there over two days. Samsonov’s refusal or deception does not resolve that obligation. Instead, the loan episode belongs to the sequence of unsuccessful efforts and desperate decisions through which Dmitri confronts the consequences of his financial conduct.
